Best time for Malapascua Dive Trips
Malapascua has a couple of seasons which are wet and dry seasons. Wet season falls every June to December and the best time to dive is during dry season from January to June. The visibility is up to 30 m.
Malapascua is known for some of the best shark diving in the Philippines, famous for the Thresher Sharks which can be seen at any time of year at Monad Shoal and Kemod Shoal. This area is reputedly the only place in the world where the thresher shark can be seen within recreational diver limits on a regular basis. Malapascua also has a reputation for first class Macro Diving.
One of the biggest draws of Malapascua are the thresher sharks. To meet these mysterious creatures, you will have to do a deep dive (about 25m) at Monad Shoal. As such, it is highly recommended that you be at least Advanced certified and above.
On top of that, it’s a good idea to use nitrox. On one of our Malapascua dive trips, we had two groups of divers – one on air and another on nitrox – doing a thresher shark dive at dawn. After 25 minutes of waiting for the elusive thresher sharks, the divers on air had to end the dive without a sighting, in order to stay within the no-deco limits. The group on nitrox continued to wait, and after five minutes, the thresher sharks appeared! Since that incident, we’ve always encouraged divers to be nitrox-certified before visiting Malapascua. Nitrox tanks are available at the Malapascua dive operator.
