Combining the best of instructional technology and live instruction, Amazing Dive keeps its class sizes small to give a personalised experience.

The Open Water Diver Theory Session is scheduled to fit most Singaporean working schooling schedules, and it counts towards your progress to become a fully certified PADI Open Water Diver.

You’ll need to book on our schedule and attend two Theory Sessions on Wednesday(Part A) and Thursday(Part B). Prior to this, you should have collected your Open Water Course Materials and also made full payment about 7 days in advance.

Each session is an after-office-school-hours affair from 6.30pm to about 8.30pm, at the AmazingDive Shop @ 273C New Bridge Road.

Scheduled:
Every Wednesday(Part A) and Thursday (Part B)
6.30pm-8.30pm

Location:
The Amazing Dive Shop

Extracurricular:
Additionally, you will get to see what it is like to go diving, learn and practice underwater signalling and communications, and even try out what it feels like to breathe using Scuba equipment readily available in the classroom.

Go ahead to have a good feel of the equipment you will be using in the pool and in the Open Water sessions; try on a mask, wetsuit or even learn extracurricular topics such as the difference between different types of fins; how to pick a mask, etc. Our helpful staff will also be able to answer any queries you might have!

Students from Amazing Dive are known to graduate as Open Water Divers with very high confidence and skill levels relative to average standards- confident enough to immediately attempt the Advanced Courses.

Producing students of this standard takes a good deal of effort-from us, and definitely from you too. Please go through your OWD materials, on your own, to the best of your ability! We usually discuss and share about extra-curricular topics through multimedia and live instruction, instead of repeating what is already covered in the textbook.

This isn’t the cheapest Dive Course in Singapore, but you’ll get the best value out of it if you’re passionate about learning to dive.
Do a quick research on anything about Diving – and share it with the class!

Your own Certification Dives. Turquoise waters teem with life and mysteries, simply waiting for you. It’ll take your breath away. This is the time of your life, something you’ve always been waiting for!

During the months of end February to late October, we run trips to Pulau Tioman and Pulau Dayang in Malaysia, and during the rest of the year we run trips to Bintan.

In order to complete the Open Water Dive Course, you will need to attempt and complete at least four dives. In these four dives, we will help you to master the skills you have already practised in the confined pool sessions, as well as fine tune your technical skills such as buoyancy control and basic creature identification.

However, we are unique in offering five dives in order to cater to students who may miss a dive or in the event of bad weather; ideally, the fifth dive will be your first non-training, leisure dive where you will be able to have an idea of how it is like to use all your skills in tandem and integrate your learning into practice. The fifth dive also helps you to build up your confidence as a leisure diver and further fine-tuning prepares you well for your Advanced Open Water Diver Course.

Book a slot on our and join up for an Open Water Trip at Pulau Tioman, or Pulau Dayang in Malaysia. It’s a 3D2N full board trip; we’ll meet to leave Singapore (location to be advised) between 5.45pm to 10.00pm (timings cannot be confirmed as it depends on the tide, so before signing up, please make sure departing at 5.45pm shouldn’t be a problem for you!) on Friday and we’ll return to Singapore at about 8pm on Sunday.

Schedule (Dayang, Tioman)
Meet up Time: Every Friday 5.45-10pm
Meet up Location: To be confirmed a week before trip, usually near the Shop
Dive Location: Tioman, Island Reef Resort and Happy Inn Resort/Dayang Blues Resort
End Time: Sunday ~8pm
For trips to Bintan, we leave on Saturday at 7.30am from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal and return to Singapore on Sunday at 10.00pm.

Schedule (Bintan)
Meet up Time: Every Saturday 7.30am
Meet up Location: Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, Singapore 498833
Dive Location: Bintan Agro Beach/ Cabana Beach Resort
End Time: Sunday 10.00pm

What do I need to dive?

  • Be at least 12 years or older
  • Be able to swim 200m without aids, only swimsuit/swimming trunks, swim cap and goggles
  • OR swim 300m with mask, fins and snorkel (Wetsuit may be used but you will need to wear weights.)

Isn’t Scuba Diving Dangerous?
Not if you follow safety guidelines. Our curriculum and advancement route has progressive limits on the depth and nature of dives; thus divers can only attempt challenging dives (Deep dive, Rescue dive) as they accumulate sufficient experience. We train recreational divers, and technical dive training (beyond recreational limits) is carried out by our staff training institute, Asia Dive Academy. We are also the only dive centre here to have a 15-year (and counting) accident-free history since 1995.

How deep can I go?
18m for the Open Water Diver Certification, and 30m for the Advanced Open Water Certification. The maximum depth for recreational diving is 40m, and the contingency (emergency) depth is 45m. However the deeper you go, the faster your air runs out; and the best dive sites are often between 12-18m in depth (except for deep wreck dives on our trips to Subic Bay, Phillippines; Seven Skies Wrecks, Malaysia and Tulamben USS Navy Wreck, Bali!)

So does it mean that if I go to Tioman, I only dive in one area?
No. Every location-Tioman, Dayang, Bintan, Maldives, Similans, Manado- you name it- houses quite a few dive sites. We will dive in different sites, and each site often has its own special character and attraction. In Tioman for example there are more than 15 popular dive sites. Renggis is noted for its wonderful coral coverage, sharks and turtles, the Marine Park is noted for its 7 trawler shipwrecks and giant puffers, Genting House Reef is known for its fantastic night dives, cuttlefish and bamboo sharks, and Malang Rocks famous for the underwater granite swim-throughs and stingrays. It’s a long list, and if you wish to see large pelagics like manta rays and whalesharks, poke us for advice on where to find them. We’ve been there!

I hate administration procedures. Do I have to fill in a million forms, make a thousand calls and mail a hundred documents before I can even start?
We’ve streamlined the entire training process to cut down on the administrative and paper wastage components. Our OneDiver system saves you time, saves us administrative costs and saves the Earth in using much less paper than before. Pick convenience and an ecofriendly start to your adventure. How long is a dive? How long can a tank of air last?
This depends on your rate of air consumption as well as your nitrogen loading. You’ll learn about both concepts during the course, and typically we use a 12L aluminium yoke valve tank, pressurized to 200bar. With 50bar of air as reserve, dives typically last for anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour on average.

Can I stay down longer?
Yes you can with a variety of methods: Using Enriched Air Nitrox, which is air enriched with oxygen, to lengthen your bottom time. You may take the PADI EAN course immediately after completing your Open Water Diver Course. It costs only about S$180. You may also use multiple tanks, which is more commonly a technique used by technical divers, or simply improving upon your air consumption via practice, better exposure protection, and methods such as skip breathing.

I heard about people getting intoxicated when they go deep. What’s this about?
This is called Nitrogen Narcosis, or “getting narc’ed”. Narcosis occurs when you dive deep, typically beyond 30m, and the deeper you go, the greater the loss of focus, impaired judgement and coordination. It’s like being drunk- except that the effects reverse completely when you ascend to shallower waters. More importantly, the diver might get overconfident and act in a hazardous and unsafe manner; which is a precursor to an accident. We teach how to cope with, prevent and react to Narcosis at depth in our PADI Open Water Diver Course.

I’m crazy about diving and I want to be a Divemaster!
Whoa, take it slow! We’ve got packages to help you get there at the best value, but you’ll need time and experience to develop into a proper dive professional. Drop by the Shop or drop us an email and we’ll try our best to map out the best route for you!

What if I feel like going to the restroom in the middle of a Dive?
Well well well… You are wearing a wetsuit, and nobody can notice it anyway… What do you think?

Isn’t the pressure painful?
That’s a common misconception. We will teach you how to ‘equalise’, which is a diving technique you’ll learn in no time. Equalising is also known as a Valsalva Maneuvre, which equates the pressure in your middle ear with the surrounding pressure of the water. The pressure you feel as you descend deeper is known as a ‘squeeze’, and other ‘squeezes’ such as mask squeeze and dry suit squeeze are issues that can be easily rectified by a confident student.

Should I buy a BCD and a regulator?
It is not advisable to invest immediately in all the equipment, especially the regulator and your BCD. These sophisticated equipment comes in various types and it’ll be good to understand these equipment and their differences in detail before making an informed purchase- your equipment depends on the type of dive you love to do, the techniques you are more comfortable to, and your budget of course.

Should I buy anything at all?
As an Open Water Diver, getting your personal mask and snorkel is a great idea due to hygiene and optical clarity reasons. If you have long hair, it is a must to get a mask pad at about $10 to avoid entanglement during the exercises. If you are serious about getting proper propulsion and control, or if you tend to get blisters when using the rental fins, get a pair of fins and comfort booties. For safety, you might consider purchasing a steel pointer for signalling purposes at about $15. If you do not wish to get tan lines, or wish to avoid hydroid or jellyfish stings, do bring your own or purchase a simple rashguard or surfing top. At the very least, get your own mask and snorkel!

The time of the month has come, and I don’t know if I can dive!
For ladies, the fluid pressure of the sea keeps everything in. In fact, you will find it difficult to pee underwater. For a peace of mind, you may use a tampon; we always keep some of those handy on our trip first aid kit, simply ask our crew discreetly. It is also unlikely that you will lure sharks or other sea creatures. For men, please exhibit higher levels of gentlemanliness and sensitivity to the ladies.

Will sharks eat me?
Marine creatures rarely attack unprovoked, and even so, the sound of bubbles from your SCUBA unit usually deters aggressors. Scuba equipment, especially the tank, also happens to be more difficult to digest. Dive locations also determine the type of sharks you will see, and your Divemaster will adequately prepare you for any special equipment or techniques you could use e.g. shark cage in Australia for Great Whites. In Asia however we typically see reef sharks, hammerheads, leopard sharks and whale sharks. The latter 2 tend to be the largest and also the most docile. In fact, we predate on sharks instead of the other way around.

Will the tank explode?
Absolutely unlikely. Tanks are built to withstand extreme impact and usually we handle them like eggs. Also they have burst disk assemblies which release excess pressure from over pressurization safely. Furthermore, the main cause of tanks exploding is the combustion of non oxygen safe materials within the tank with a tank being filled with Enriched Air Nitrox or 100% oxygen. We will not be using EAN or 100% oygen, and our compressors are unable to fill tanks past 232 bar pressure in the first place, making tank explosions virtually impossible.

What is the student-instructor ratio?
By PADI standards, for the Open Water Diver course, the maximum ratio is 10 students to one instructor. However, we usually conduct our lessons up to a maximum of 8 students to one instructor plus an additional Divemaster, making the staff ratio 4:1 instead of 10:1.

I don’t have a buddy to take the course with me! What should I do?
Sign up anyways, we’ll get you a buddy. With trips happening every week, you’re guaranteed of having a partner somehow; in the worst case scenario, if you happen to be the only student, the Divemaster will be your buddy. How’s that for a peace of mind?

Can I choose who I room with?
The standard arrangement is quad or triple sharing, and we’ll try our best to put you together with others of the same sex if you are not comfortable to room with hunks/babes of the opposite sex. We’ll also put friends, couples and relatives together to the best of our ability. Alternatively you may choose twin sharing, double sharing or single sharing options- let us know early!

How many weights will I need?
In diving, we wear weights on a weight belt or weight pouch integrated into the BCD in order to offset the positive buoyancy of the equipment as well as our bodies. We use 2lb/1kg weights. To achieve proper weighting, the diver should float at eye level while holding a normal breath of air and having an empty Buoyancy Control Device. Naturally as salt water is more dense than freshwater, you will typically need one or two more weights in salt water than you had in the freshwater pool. The number of weights assigned to you is based on an estimation by the instructor and is immediately related to your fat/muscle mass ratio; as fat tissues are buoyant and muscles are negatively buoyant. A sound word of advice: you will practically never, ever have to buy weights as a recreational diver, no matter where you go. It’s usually provided free of charge.

Do I need batteries for my dive torch during the dive?
We will only conduct night dives for Advanced students and leisure divers with Advanced certifications; so Open Water Divers will not need to purchase batteries prior to the dive.

I’ve got a busy schedule!
The way our schedules are structured ensures that you can easily fit our Course schedules into your schooling/working life. We break up the course into bite sized components; you may complete your OWD course in as little as 8 days or as long as a month or two. Our Theory sessions are held after working hours and our pool sessions are on Sundays; even trips are held over the weekends.

I’m a backpacker and I have limited time in Singapore and I just want to do a quick 1 day stint.
Unfortunately you will not be able to do a course in such a short timeframe, but we do run Discover Scuba Diving in the pool and in Bintan. For certified divers looking for a one-day dive trip with 2 dives, check out our Day dives to Bintan in the leisure trip section.
Insurance doesn’t cover extreme sports, you know. That is why we have worked for years with AIG International Assist to provide absolute cover for recreational diving activities. Affordably! For $27, you get arguably the best coverage at a great value. Since you have signed up on OneDiver with us, we’ll simply use your information from there and you don’t have to fill in any additional forms. It’s a peace of mind with convenience and value.

Are there any hidden costs I should be aware of?
Nope, we are very honest with our package pricing. It’s all you need!

Are the rental equipment very lousy? Will they break or stop working?
For critical life support equipment such as the BCD and regulator we use top-line equipment from revered manufacturers. We only use Scubapro Mk2/R190 and Mk2/R295 regulators which are fail-safe and high quality Scubapro T-One jacket BCDs. If the equipment is faulty the problem is visible during setup, and we always have spares onboard for exchange.

May I meet the crew?
Sure, check out their profiles here, and do find all of us on Facebook as well for any questions!

I have set my eyes upon a lovely fellow student. May I have his/her number and contacts?
Bribe us with a drink, we’ll think about it. Kidding! You’re alone on this one buddy! Hint: Add us on facebook and check out diver tags!

I have set my eyes upon a lovely member of the crew. May I have his/her number and contacts?
Try the ‘About Us’ page, or the ‘Contact Us’ page.

May I ‘reserve’ a particular instructor?
Usually our students do so for their Advanced Open Water Dives after a great experience with the Open Water Dive certification. You may request and we’ll try our best to; but why not keep it a surprise for yourself? Diving is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.

And if I want to buy some of my own basic equipment?
Check out our shop, where we only sell stuff we use, and like using. Advice: Get your basic equipment such as mask and snorkel prior to Open Sea Dives, leave the expensive ones for later! Check out our dive graduates review corner for some good advice from your seniors- others who have completed the course before!

I heard you guys brew your own beer?! OMG?
Yup, our crew designs and brews up dive-themed beers amidst other awesome activities. Like we said, it’s a lifestyle.

Why will I get the best trip prices from you?
Economies of Scale, no-hidden-costs package pricing. And long term working relations with dive resorts. Check out our dive trips section, or contact our dedicated travel department at travel@amazingdive.com.

Okay I’m sold… what next?
Drop us an email at info@amazingdive.com, and we’ll guide you through the whole process! Alternatively follow the steps to sign up above and pop by the Shop to collect your materials to begin.
